But I wanted to do something different, so this chart measures where settings fall on the GrimDark/NobleBright scale. A quick primer: Noble/Grim: On the X-axis, Noble/Grim measures the general outlook and attitudes of the setting's protagonists. The term originated with a tag line from Warhammer 40,000: "In the grim darkness of the far future there is only WAR." Readers tend to take two different angles on this, both of which apply. The first, and least useful, idea of Grimdark is that it is ultraviolent, gory, and that there is a nonstop level of brutality and violence. The most well known grim dark style is often called “Blanchitsu” after the very influential artist, John Blanche. Blanchitsu has a strong fan base and there are many different styles within its umbrella. It’s difficult to define it, as this article demonstrates.
