I have a 1994 Johnson 30 hp tiller electric start. I am trying to adjust the max timing stopper because when I got the outboard the stopper was adjusted 1/2 to 3/4 inch away from the edge of the timing plate.2000 Johnson 90Hp. The spec in the book is not an absolute for idle but a starting point. How your motor idles has a lot to do with how deep it sits in the water ...

The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage. The first step of the link and sync procedures is to check (set) the timing pointer using a TDC dial gauge.
