I have a 2012 jeep jku sport, It runs hot only while driving, as soon as I park it and just let it idle it cooks down to around 208-215 and stays constant, while driving it has/will get as high as 245, but will fluctuate from 228-235. I have replaced the oil cooler (was leaking), the thermostat, and radiator cap. The reason they did this is they wanted the oil to be hotter and the exhaust gas temps to be lower. By having lower exhaust gas temps they were able to run 20% exhaust gas in the cylinder on the compression stroke rather than the normal 10%. Believe it or not, this actually increased fuel economy by 5 to 6%.It does nothing when the key is turned, besides turn the radio/ac on. Yesterday, I noticed “HOT OIL” come up on the dash. I checked oil level. It was fine. Temperature outside have been in the 90-100’s. I doubt that has anything to do with it. Oil has been changed. Engine coolant is good. Not running any codes. Normal temps should be in 200-220 range, 230-ish after strong acceleration or steep hill. I recently got to 240 (with a couple seconds at 244) while towing a heavy trailer uphill on the interstate in 89F weather - 4000 rpm in 3rd at 55 mph. So yeah, 250 isn’t normal.

Decided to replace thermostat. Put new Mopar thermostat in, and the JK still runs at 220 on average. Took JK to my other mechanic. He did some research and found that drilling a 1/8" hole in thermostat will allow Jeep to run cooler. Decided to drill hole. The Jeep is still running hot. About 220. Took the JK back to the dealer.

Started to overheat after a trip to an ORV park but I washed the radiator out and its pretty clean on the outside. Also drained and refilled the system completely.

It is the optimal temperature for the car. If you run without a thermostat it would not let the car get up to operating temperature for a long while.
