I've never done a "Proper" break-in according to the Owner's Manual ever. Vary the throttle position, but don't run prolonged WOT (Running Wide Open for hours at a time, usually.) for the first 600 or so miles and then change the engine and transmission oil. Then if you do the mods your talking about, bolt them on and immediately have it dyno tuned.

However, in terms of just the motor, variable speed for the first 300 miles (the break-in period in the manual) is a safe bet.

The key is to vary the RPM, which by having small hills, twists, and a few stops workout perfectly. Just don't become too paranoid and lug the motor.
