The older cranes had a square slot milled around the post on the crane. A square nosed screw went into that slot to retain the crane. The smooth back strap is definitely a Model 58 feature. A real tell on this gun is the juncture between the barrel and frame. The Model 58 frame isn't grooved for a barrel rib and is also lower than the barrel rib on a target sighted barrel. It appears to have been refinished but not by S&W at some point. A good cleaning and treatment for any rusting and it should make a good shooter. The .38 Masterpiece target revolver was made from the late 1940's until 1982, then reintroduced in 1991 with a full lug barrel and made to 1999. Your gun shipped in 1974. As a new Victory owner with around 500 rounds through it, I have a couple of questions: I have had a FTF about every 75 rounds with no primer marks. Also the slide only locks back on the last round about 1 in 4 or 5 magazines but locks back every time if you put a empty magazine in and rack the slide.
