Dating a pre-1982 Model 64. Yesterday I bought a pristine perfect Smith and Wesson Model 64 and would like some help in dating the gun. Its serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame and is D5824XX. The only markings opposite the yolk on the frame are simply: "MOD.64". It is not a model 64 "dash" anything, just a Model 64.Trying to figure out the rough value, age and any weird quirks the model might have since they didn't tell me too much at the shop. Jan 6, 2012 · Taking the grips off the 19-4 and the serial number is on the butt plate. The same number is repeated in the #1 position in the photo above in my first post. The serial numbers; 19-3 4K99xxx. 19-4 39K9xxx. Yes, the 19-4 is a blued 6-inch barrel, and is a beauty. It looks brand new. I would guess by the serial that the gun does not have a trigger guard screw (front of the trigger guard). S&W has made millions of them (still in production) starting in 1899. A picture would help with value but depending on location and condition, $250-$400. Save the Second Amendment, take a kid shooting!

Don’t need the serial number to see it’s the first type. Hate to say it but, you will find that the box is not original to that gun. Check for a serial number under the bottom section, written in white pen. That box is for a 7XXXX or higher. As said, the 241Kxxx is the SN and that dates the gun to early 1982. The -2 after M66 in the model number indicates the second engineering change, which occurred in 1982 and lasted until 1986 when the -3 was released. The Model 66 was initially released in 1970. The -2 change eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed charge holes in the cylinder.Model 41 Mfg date.
