You do not need to rely on the radar. Just go down, i.e. follow the direction gravity is pulling your Astroneer towards. Radar was added to the compass in March 2021, two years after the game's 1.0 release, and the game was playable and you were able to finish it before that already. the radar does not show the core on any planet.
