Fellow Michigander here. Your best bet would probably be a Subaru forester, Though the 4runner would be my next choice. Jeep Cherokee are cheap and will run forever you could easily spend less than 8k and mod the jeep. Maintenance is cheap as well and I haven't found cars that handle off roading better than jeeps.
