I’ve a client with a Comcast (Xfinity) XP7 gateway. It’s running OK. Between the client’s networked devices and the gateway is an SPI firewall. By putting the gateway into bridge mode its wifi is disabled, which is the client’s requirement. Then the gateway should still let networked devices behind the firewall access the outside world.

On the R7000, I went to the Advanced Tab, Advanced Setup, Router/AP/Bridge, and set it to Bridge Mode. I also went into the Advanced Wireless settings and disabled the 2.4G radio. The garage R7000 does not support any WiFi clients. I believe how to do this is described in the R7000 User Manual. Works Great.
I don't have a smartphone so I can't use it. Bridge mode setting does show up in 10.0.0.1 which can be accessed after the network is activated. Whether the user can put the modem in bridge mode, or, whether a call to Comcast is needed I can't tell as I don't use it. You are correct. They are tightening down what the user can do.
